Top Small Screen Selections: 7 Must-Watch Motion Pictures This Week

Top Selection

The Substance Film

The filmmaker's unflinching critique examines the oppressive nature of women's appearance as well as the perceived horrors of growing older. Demi Moore delivers a masterful acting turn playing Elisabeth, an aging celebrity reduced to starring in a fitness program on the small screen. Pushed out thanks to her deceitful superior Harvey, she turns to a secretive and horrifying process known as the Substance. This generates a younger clone portrayed by Margaret Qualley, leading to an increasingly toxic connection between the two. This Friday, Paramount Plus

This Mystery Thriller

This suspenseful story stars Keira Knightley in the role of Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for some time off from writing about international wars to board a luxury cruise with an ailing Norwegian shipping heiress and charitable figure, her spouse, as well as other affluent individuals. Yet once an unknown lady disappears from the ship during the evening and all passengers denies she ever existed, the reporter's sleuthing skills take over. Available now, on Netflix

Presence Film

Steven Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries in this nifty supernatural story captured wholly from the viewpoint of the spirit. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe occupies their recent residence, the camera – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of conscious of the supernatural presence, and it looks like guarding her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel

This Self-Referential Film

The iconic actor embraces his unique fame via this autobiographical spoof. He plays a self-obsessed celebrity named Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to appear at a birthday party on the Spanish island for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by the CIA to spy on the potential kingpin, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, prime time, on Channel 4

The Black Phone

Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well despite the lack of a follow-up. Set in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has left the youth frightened. After Finney is taken by the villain and imprisoned in a cellar, he fears a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line on the wall continues to ring, with ghostly voices offering help, as the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister could save him. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, late evening, on Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for materialism in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky biopic of the disgraced TV preacher and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple begin capitalizing on the American public's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, however Chastain manages to show Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, late night, Film4

This Espionage Thriller

The current week's additional entry from the filmmaker is a spy mystery as sharp as the polo necks sported by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. He is tasked to identify a double agent inside the organization out of five possibilities – including is his spouse. Both actors are masters of calm composure, leading to a delightful psychological game of fact versus fiction develops. The supporting cast take part the clever spy entertainment. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
