Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People buying such drugs should be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of cravings.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
